ORYANTALİST SÖYLEM DOĞRULTUSUNDA OLUŞTURULAN TÜRK VE TÜRKİYE İMGESİNİN AMERİKAN SİNEMASINDA SUNUMU
Öz
Oryantalizm, en sade anlatımla, Batı’nın Doğu ile ilgili olan her türlü çalışması ve Doğu’yu algılayış biçimi olarak tanımlanabilir. Oryantalist çalışmalar bazen düşmanı daha iyi tanıma ya da kontrol altında tutma amacını taşımaktayken bazen de gizemli, mistik ve egzotik olarak konumlandırılmış Doğu’ya karşı duyulan ilgi ve meraktan kaynaklanmaktadır. Batı’nın oryantalist söylemi, edebi metinlerden, sanat eserlerine, bilimsel yayınlardan dini öğretilere, siyasi tartışmalardan kitle iletişim araçlarına kadar her alanda ve mecrada yüzyıllardır kendini göstermektedir. Hâlihazırda bu söylem en fazla sinema filmlerinde kendisini göstermektedir. Çünkü sinema, örtük ve açık göstergelerle en önemli ideolojik aygıtlardan biri olarak kültürler arası ontolojik ve epistemolojik ayrımın hem üreticisi hem de gösterenidir. 19. yüzyılın sonlarına doğru bir kent eğlencesi olarak ortaya çıkan sinema, yüzyılı aşkın varlığı süresince büyük değişim ve dönüşümlere uğramıştır. Sinema sanatsal, kültürel, ideolojik kaygılarla farklı tür ve görünümlere sahip olabilmektedir. Dünya sinema endüstrisinin merkezi olarak tanımlayabileceğimiz Hollywood, bu muazzam gücü en etkili şekilde kullanan sinema ekolüdür. Çünkü Hollywood filmleri dünya çapında en fazla izleyiciye ulaşan en popüler yapımlardır. Hollywood’un dünya sinema endüstrisi üzerindeki bu gözle görülür hegemonyası düşünüldüğünde, Amerikan filmlerinde yer alan Türkiye ve Türklere dair imge ve temsiller ile Türk tipolojilerinin sunum şekli daha da önem kazanmaktadır. Bu noktadan hareketle, bu çalışmanın amacı Edward W. Said’in ortaya attığı oryantalizm kavramı çerçevesinde Amerikan Sinemasında yer alan Türk tipolojisi örnekleri ve Türkiye tasvirlerinin nasıl sunulduğunu ortaya koymaktır. Bu kapsamda belirlenen 23 Hollywood filmi eleştirel film çözümlemesi yöntemiyle incelenmiştir

Öz
Orientalism, in the simplest terms, can be defined as any work of the West with regard to the East and the way it perceives the East. Orientalist studies sometimes have the purpose of knowing or controlling the enemy better while they sometimes originate from the interest and curiosity to the mysterious and exotic East. The Orientalist discourse of the West has manifested itself for centuries in every field, from literary texts to artworks, from scientific publications to religious teachings, from political discussions to mass media. Currently, this discourse shows itself mostly in the cinema films. Because cinema, as one of the most important ideological devices with implicit and explicit indicators, is both the producer and Exhibitor of the ontological and epistemological distinction between cultures. The cinema, which emerged as a city entertainment towards the end of the 19th century, has undergone major changes and transformations throughout its existence for more than a century. Cinema can have different types and appearances with artistic, cultural, ideological concerns. Hollywood, which we can define as the center of the world cinema industry, is a cinema school that uses this tremendous power in the most effective way. Because its films are the most popular productions that reach the most audiences worldwide. Considering Hollywood's apparent hegemony over world cinema industry, the images and representations about Turkey and Turks in American films and the presentation style of Turkish typologies gains even more importance. From this point of view, the aim of this study is to show how the examples of Turkish typology and Turkey depictions in American Cinema are presented in the framework of the concept of orientalism revealed by Edward W. Said. In this context, 23 Hollywood films were analyzed by using critical film analysis method
