““OUT OF THE EAST, LIGHT” AND THE SYMBOLISM OF YELLOW

Öz

Ex oriente lux in Latin means “light from the east”. Light, used as a metaphor, means civilization and wisdom as much as dawn or rising sun. In that context circle or sign of sun has been the expression of creator indicating prosperity and enlightenment. Circle has also been identified as one of the earliest symbols dating back to monolythic cultures. Importantly, even before the discovery of the wheel, sun has been represented throughout cultures in the form of dynamic sun circle or geometric sun cross Jung, 1997 . Another representation of sun, halo, originated from eastern cultures and observed in the western world starting from Helenistic age, means initiation. The word “oriente” or “east” in the Latin phrase “Ex oriente lux” points out towards a true direction not used with a meaning of “others” or “everyone else with different cultures”. That direction leads to civilizations in far Asia, Mesopotamia and Asia minor. The association between gold, yellow and sun has been one of the hallmarks of symbolism. Yellow, as the most reflective chromatic colour, has been identified to enhance mental awareness. Consequently, yellow or gold have been used to symbolise divine wisdom throughout ancient cultures to middle age, from 19th century colour symbolisms to the paintings of Van Gogh, therefore modern ages. In contrast, several negative cultural meanings were attributed to yellow which has been highlighted by F. Portal in accordance with 19th century colour symbolism
