Bu inceleme, 19. yüzyılda Britanya ve Rus imparatorlukları arasındaki Orta Asya jeopolitik rekabetini anlatan, popüler tarih alanında öncü eserlerden biri olan Peter Hopkirk’in The Great Game kitabını eleştirel bir perspektifle değerlendirmektedir. Hopkirk’in akıcı ve ilgi çekici anlatımı, bölgenin tarihsel dinamiklerine geniş okuyucu kitlesinin dikkatini çekmiş olsa da eser seyahatnamelere ve ikincil kaynaklara dayandığı için akademik titizlikten ve yerel aktörlerin sosyo-kültürel karmaşıklıklarını kapsamlı biçimde ele almaktan uzak kalmaktadır. Adeeb Khalid, Alexander Morrison ve diğer çağdaş araştırmacıların sunduğu disiplinlerarası ve detaylı çalışmalar, Hopkirk’in anlatısını sorgulamakta ve tamamlamaktadır. Ayrıca Sheila Miyoshi Jager’in The Other Great Game adlı eseri, “Büyük Oyun” kavramının coğrafi ve tarihsel sınırlarını genişleterek literatüre yeni bir bakış açısı kazandırmaktadır. Bu inceleme, Hopkirk’in eserini çağdaş tarih yazımı bağlamında konumlandırarak, eserin temel bir kaynak olmasına rağmen tamamlayıcı akademik çalışmalara ihtiyaç duyduğunu vurgulamaktadır.

This review critically examines Peter Hopkirk’s The Great Game, a seminal popular history narrating the 19th-century geopolitical rivalry between the British and Russian empires in Central Asia. While Hopkirk’s engaging storytelling brought widespread attention to the region’s historical dynamics, the work’s reliance on travelogues and secondary sources limits its academic rigor, particularly regarding local agency and socio-cultural complexities. Recent scholarship by Adeeb Khalid, Alexander Morrison, and others provides nuanced, interdisciplinary insights that challenge and complement Hopkirk’s narrative. Furthermore, Sheila Miyoshi Jager’s The Other Great Game expands the conceptual boundaries of the “Great Game,” situating it within broader East Asian contexts. This review situates Hopkirk’s work within contemporary historiographical debates, underscoring its role as a foundational but partial account that invites further scholarly engagement.
