THE SELJUK-BYZANTINE DIPLOMATIC PROCESS IN THE AFTERMATH OF THE BATTLE OF PASINLER (KAPETRON): A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF CHRISTIAN AND ISLAMIC SOURCES
Öz
The 1048 Battle of Pasinler (Kapetron) represents significantly more than a mere military confrontation between the Great Seljuk Empire and the Byzantine Empire; it constitutes a foundational phase that initiated the processes of diplomatic recognition and the construction of ideological legitimacy for both political powers. This study examines the post-battle diplomatic activities, embassy exchanges, and treaty stipulations through a comparative approach, utilizing the intersecting texts of Christian and Islamic historiography. The research aims to reveal how imperial-centric and regional narratives, alongside the Islamic conquest tradition, constructed divergent rhetorical accounts of the identical historical event. The mediating role of the Marwanid Emirate, the release of the Georgian commander Liparit IV of Kldekari a figure who has importance in the Caucasus geopolitics and treaty conditions such as the restoration of the mosque in Constantinople to have the khutba recited in the names of the Abbasid Caliph and Tughril Beg, are analyzed in terms of their symbolic and diplomatic dimensions. The findings demonstrate that, from the Seljuk perspective, rather than constituting the border security; it aimed at securing recognition as the legitimate leader of the Sunni Islamic world within the Byzantine capital, thereby establishing the ideological infrastructure for the 1055 entry into Baghdad. Ultimately, the article determines the decisive role of the 1048 diplomatic negotiations in the formation of eleventh-century Turco-Byzantine relations.
