Ahmad Shawqi (1868-1932) has been called the Amîr al-Shuʿarâʾ (Prince of Poets) of modern Arabic poetry with his memorable qasidas. Shawqi, who is known for his lyrical poems that he brought to the Arab literary tradition, is one of the leading poets and dramatists of modern Egyptian literature. He made a great contribution to the field of poetic theater by developing its style and form. For this reason, he has been accepted as the father of verse theater in Arabic literature. Shawqi’s historical drama, Amirat al-Andalus (Princess of Andalusia-1932), is the only theatrical work he wrote in prose. It takes its subject from the history of Islam.
