THE CINEMA OF GERMANY: A HISTORICAL EVALUATION OF THE ERRATIC COURSE OF A NATIONAL FILM INDUSTRY
Öz
This paper evaluates the history of German cinema and its influence on the history of world cinema. The majority of studies written to date about German cinema focus on products of German Expressionism and the New Wave, and there exists a need for more inclusive approaches to the history of filmmaking in Germany, especially in terms of evaluating how the social experience of two World Wars, the Nazi era, and the segregation of East and West Germany was reflected in films of these eras. This study attempts to trace the impressive -if erratic- influence and popularity of German cinema by beginning with the earliest years of the history of cinema, and demonstrating that there is more to German cinema than the limited context of the New Wave and German Expressionism. Within the scope of this paper, we consider movies and artistic movements, how the cinematic narratives have been established in response to social developments, and how contemporary German cinema can be situated in the broader context of the global cinema scene. An historical assessment of German cinema provides a glimpse of what the art form may be like in the future, as well as insight into what role it could play on the world cinema scene, thus underscoring the importance of this project.
