The construction of “other” among gays: Being Feminine

Öz

The marginalization of gays by labeling them as womanish is explained with homophobia. This study examines how gays as the “other” construct the femininity as a discursive in their daily talks. During the study conducted with a critical discourse analysis method, gay individuals between ages of 18 and 34 were interviewed. Six focus groups consisting of two participants and an interviewer were formed with homosexual men. The interviews were recorded and the records were tape scripted. Language sources which the repeating themes during the course of the interviews are based upon were identified and analyzed. As a consequence of the analyses, a Feminine Gay Repertoire was achieved. The interviewees used this language source to distinguish feminine gays from masculine gays. This dinstinction was conducted by relating the discourse of man’s being strong and woman’s being weak. It was seen that, similar to woman’s being “other” compared to man; feminine gays were marginalized from gays behaving in line with heteronormativity. As a consequence of the interviews conducted, it was concluded that as distinct from homophobia; womanhood and femininity are marginalized among gays as well.
