Instrumentalization of the Flag

There has not been any research in Turkey about the meaning constructions of the Turkish flag. Yahyagil (2013) in his interviews with the university students focused on these constructions, the interpretative repertoires on which they are based and what kind of meanings participants have constructed during the interaction. In this study, we would like to make a more detailed analysis by focusing on one of the recurring meaning pattterns used by the participants in Yahyagil’s (2013) study which can be grouped under the label “the flag as an instrument”. This repertoire, in addition to the absence of any study about it, is significant in terms of showing the flag has been objectified and can be used as an instrument to carry out other acts during interaction. Two focus group and four one-on-one interviews were conducted with a total of nine participants. Conversations were recorded, transcribed, and the recurring meaning patterns under the label ‘flag as an instrument” were analyzed with critical discursive psychology (Wetherell and Potter, 1992). According to this the highly flexibe nature of the flag’s instrumentalism construct very complex and multi-layered meanings of action.
