The Relationship between Language and the Self: The Effects of Aphasia on the Self

It is traditionally considered that there is a correspondence between language and the mind. That is, language is taken to be a mirror of the mind. Another view claims that language is the mind’s most essential component. It is difficult to separate language, so closely linked with the mind, from the concept of self. This study aims to clarify the relationship between language and the self. The human self and language are constructed through a temporal process. Therefore, the concepts of self and language need to be evaluated developmentally. The purpose of this study is to shed light on the relationship between language and self through aphasia. This relationship is presented by emphasizing the key role language plays in a person’s understanding of the world, themselves, and others. The world, in which people name objects and represent events through language, is defined both as a realm of existence in which humans reside and as a network of relationships that allows connection with others. Language is considered a comprehensive subject that encompasses syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. The self is viewed as a concept that can be understood within the framework of consciousness, self-consciousness, and social relation. The study demonstrates a parallel between the three components of language and those of the self. By examining the effects of aphasia on syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, the study demonstrates how this disorder negatively impacts a person’s awareness of the world, their own self, and their relationships with others. This study attempted to answer crucial questions such as the role of language in experiencing the world, understanding oneself, and relating to others, as well as how the loss of language in aphasia affects the self.

Dil ve Benlik İlişkisi: Afazinin Benlik Üzerindeki Etkileri

Öz

Geleneksel yaklaşım, dil ve zihin arasında bir örtüşme olduğunu kabul etmektedir. Bu yaklaşım dilin zihnin aynası olduğunu savunmaktadır. Alternatif bir yaklaşım ise dilin zihnin aynası olmadığını, ancak onun en önemli özelliği olduğunu öne sürmektedir. Zihin ile bu denli bağlantılı olan dil kavramını, benlik kavramından ayrı düşünmek oldukça zordur. Bu çalışma, dil ve benlik arasındaki ilişkiye odaklanmaktadır. İnsan benliği ve dil yetisi, yaşamsal süreç içerisinde oluşmaktadır. Bu nedenle dil ve benlik konusu gelişimsel olarak değerlendirilmeye ihtiyaç duymaktadır. Bu derlemenin amacı, dil ile benlik arasındaki ilişkiyi edinilmiş bir dil bozukluğu olan afazi üzerinden aydınlatmaya çalışmaktır. Dil, insanın dünyayı, kendisini ve diğerlerini anlamasında kilit bir role sahiptir. Dil ve benlik arasındaki ilişki dilin bu kilit rolüne vurgu yapılarak açıklanmaktadır. Dil dünyadaki nesneleri adlandırmaya ve olayları temsil etmeye imkan sağlar. İnsanların dil ile anlamlandırdıkları dünya hem insanların içerisinde bulundukları bir varoluş alanı hem de diğerleri ile bağ kurabildikleri bir ilişkiler ağı olarak tanımlanmaktadır. Dil sentaks, semantik ve pragmatik bileşenlerini içeren geniş kapsamlı bir konu olarak ele alınmaktadır. Benlik ise bilinç, özbilinç ve sosyal ilişki çerçevesinde anlaşılabilecek bir kavram olarak değerlendirilmektedir. Çalışmada, dilin söz konusu üç bileşeni ile benliğin üç bileşeni arasında bir paralellik olduğu ortaya konmaktadır. Bu kapsamda, bir dil bozukluğu olan afazinin sentaks, semantik ve pragmatik üzerindeki etkileri incelenerek, bunların sırasıyla insanın dünyaya, kendi benliğine ve diğerleri ile ilişkisine dair farkındalığında nasıl olumsuzluklar yarattığı gösterilmiştir. Dil ve benlik arasındaki ilişkinin sorgulandığı bu çalışmada, dünyanın deneyimlenmesinde, insanın kendini tanımasında ve öteki ile ilişkisinde dil nasıl bir rol oynar; afazideki dil kaybı benliği nasıl etkiler gibi önemli sorular cevaplanmaya çalışılmıştır.
