To investigate the frequency of sleep disturbance and depression, and the relation between disease related variables and the level of quality of life in female patients with primary fibromyalgia. Forty-nine female patients and 27 healthy women as control group were involved. The pain severity, the presence and the severity of depression, the sleep disturbance and fatigue were evaluated respectively by visual analog scale, Beck Depression Inventory, Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index, and Multidimensional Fatigue Symptom Inventory-Short Form. The level of the quality of life was assessed by using short form 36 SF-36 . 91.8% sleep disturbance, 28.6% mild, 10.2% moderate, 28% severe and 26.5% severe depression and 98% fatigue were identified in our patients. All subgroup scores of SF-36, and mental component score MCS and physical component score PCS summary scores were lower in the FMS patients. There was a correlation between fatigue and PCS and MCS summary scores of SF-36 and between depression and MCS summary scores. FMS does affect the quality of life negatively. The fatigue and depression is common symptoms in patients with fibromyalgia and are related with the level of the quality of life. It may be beneficial to improve fatigue and depression in female patients with fibromyalgia to enhance the level of quality of life
