Dynamic effects of tourism receipts and GDP on airline passenger traffic

Öz

Air transport is closely related to economic growth and tourism. However, this relationship can vary depending on a country's level of economic development, tourism characteristics, and geographical location relative to other countries. Studies on this topic are mostly focused on a single country or a single variable. This study, however, aims to examine the dynamic effects of tourism revenues and GDP on airline passenger traffic on leading aviation sectors in countries with diverse economic, tourism, and geographical characteristics (France, USA, Türkiye, and Australia), using data covering the period 2005-2020. The Panel Autoregressive Distributed Lag (Panel ARDL) method was used to determine the long-term and short-term relationships between the variables. The Pedroni cointegration test results demonstrate a long-term equilibrium relationship between airline passenger traffic, tourism indicators, and economic growth. According to the Panel ARDL estimation results, in the long term, international tourism revenues positively affect airline passenger traffic, while an increase in the number of tourists has a negative effect. In the short term, an increase in the number of tourists stands out as the main factor stimulating aviation demand. Granger causality analysis findings reveal a unidirectional causal relationship from airline passenger traffic to tourism revenues and economic growth. These findings suggest that strategic investments in aviation infrastructure can be a supply-side driver for sustainable economic development and the tourism sector. In this context, continuous communication between private and public institutions in decision-making within these sectors is considered highly valuable.
