The Use of Cartoons in Teaching Turkish to Children: The Example of Yusufname

Öz

This study, conducted to reveal the distribution of socio-cultural elements in the animated film "Yusufname," utilized a document analysis design. To select the animated film to be examined, the 2023 report of the Television Viewing Research Committee (TİAK) was first reviewed. According to the report, a list of animated films broadcast on the most-watched children's channel, TRT Çocuk, was accessed online. During the previews, the production "Yusufname," which contains diverse socio-cultural elements and had not been previously examined, was chosen for analysis. For this purpose, six selected episodes of the film were descriptively analysed within the framework of the socio-cultural elements’ classification in the Turkish as a Foreign Language Teaching Program, specifically focusing on daily life, living conditions, interpersonal relationships, values, beliefs and attitudes, social traditions, body language, and rituals/traditional behaviours. The study aimed to find out the distribution of socio-cultural elements in the animated film "Yusufname," examining the distribution of socio-cultural elements from most to least: interpersonal relationships, values, beliefs and attitudes, daily life, social traditions. Results show that the data was related to living conditions. However, no data was found specifically regarding body language and rituals/traditional behaviours.
