In this study, the carbon footprint of flexible and rigid pavements has been monitored to contribute to a liveable world. The environmental impact of flexible and rigid road pavements’ carbon footprint throughout the entire life cycle has been monitored in accordance with the standard methods ISO 10440 and ISO 14044. Afterwards, theoretical calculations have been made using IPCC method. The primary and secondary carbon footprints for flexible and rigid pavements have been obtained using European Bitumen Association, European Union Asphalt Contractors Association and European Concrete Union Measurement Combinations methods and compared each other. Produced CO2 by construction phase and recovered CO2 afterwards, of the flexible and rigid pavements, have been listed in tables and the results are demonstrated in the Highways Agency Carbon calculation tool. As a result, flexible roads have less carbon footprint at the end of the first year after the construction. However, because of the fuel saving ratio of 2.35%, less than 5,8 tons of CO2 has been released each year compared to the flexible pavements. Consequently, when both, carbon emission and recovery, and 2.35% fuel saving rate are taken into consideration, the rigid pavement is a better and sustainable choice.
