Multi 7®: A food supplement with enzyme-inhibitory effects related to diabetes and the digestive system

Abstract

Herbs and spices have been used for hundreds of years to treat different illnesses. Nowadays, dietary supplements containing either single herbal extracts or mixtures of herbs and spices are widely used. These formulations may provide biochemical and pharmacological benefits due to the diverse phytochemicals they contain. Supplements derived from single or multiple natural sources are commonly referred to as dietary supplements. In addition to their nutritional functions, they may also exhibit pharmacological and therapeutic effects. This study investigated the inhibitory effects of Multi 7®, a nutritional supplement containing extracts of Achillea millefolium, Salvia officinalis, and Rosmarinus officinalis along with quercetin, fish oil, Boswellia serrata, phosphatidylserine, and citicoline, on enzymes associated with the digestive system and diabetes. The supplement strongly inhibited α-glucosidase, elastase, and trypsin, while moderate inhibitory effects were observed against urease and sorbitol dehydrogenase. It showed the lowest inhibitory activity on α-amylase, lipase, and pepsin. The synergistic effects of Achillea millefolium, Salvia officinalis, Rosmarinus officinalis, quercetin, Boswellia serrata, and other natural components in Multi 7® contribute to the supplement's versatile pharmacological properties. Based on these findings, it is believed that Multi 7® can be considered a supportive nutritional supplement for diabetes and digestive system disorders. However, further in vivo and clinical studies are needed to more clearly establish its clinical efficacy and safety.
