Complementary Therapies in Fibromyalgia Syndrome

Yıl 2022, Cilt: 4 Sayı: 1, 49 - 56, 20.03.2022

Öz

Fibromyalgia, the most prominent symptom of which is pain, is a chronic common musculoskeletal disease that affects the quality of life of individuals with morning stiffness, fatigue and deterioration in daily functions. Fibromyalgia, the prevalence of which increases with age, affects more women than men. The aim of the treatments is to improve the general functional status and health of the patients. Nowadays, pharmacological treatment, non-pharmacological treatment and complementary therapies are applied together or separately in treatment. Complementary therapies are frequently preferred by fibromyalgia patients as they are seen as safe and natural methods. In this review, the effectiveness of complementary therapies used in fibromyalgia was investigated. Complementary therapies considered include acupuncture, Tai Chi, Qigong, meditation and cupping therapy. The efficacy of these complementary therapies has been investigated in fibromyalgia syndrome, especially in terms of pain symptom.
