An Examination of the Development of Islamic Banking with Key Banking Indicators: The Case of Türkiye
Abstract
The conceptual development of Islamic banking gained momentum towards the late 1940s, with its applications in Türkiye beginning in the 1980s. Islamic banking in Türkiye was restructured under the name participation banking in 2005. As of 2024, nine participation banks are operating in Türkiye. The market share of participation banks, which was approximately 6% across all three main categories in 2013, has increased to 8.1% in assets, 9.29% in funds collected, and 7.3% in funds disbursed today. During this period, both qualitative and quantitative growth has been observed in participation banking. However, despite the increase in market share, it is believed that participation banks have not fully integrated their potential into the system. Enhancing the recognition of Islamic banking could further expand its position and market share within the sector. In this context, the development process of Islamic banking, which emerged as an alternative to traditional banking, constitutes the central issue of this study. The aim of this study is to examine the development process of participation banking in Türkiye between 2013 and 2024, in light of the relevant data. The data used in the study have been obtained from the database of the Participation Banks Association of Türkiye and the Banks Association of Türkiye. The study consists of the following sections: introduction, literature review, conceptual framework, data and methodology, application of analysis, and conclusion. As a result, it is observed that participation banking exhibits a positive trend in terms of total asset development and market share. When the collected funds and market share are analyzed, it becomes evident that participation banks play an active role in this field, and the ratio of funds converting into credit is an important indicator for increasing profitability. Furthermore, it has been identified that participation banks also demonstrate a positive trend in terms of branch expansion and employee employment.
