Microsoft PowerPoint software is a powerful tool that has been widely used in the worlds of business and adult education. It seems that it would be difficult to walk into most business presentations or through classroom buildings on a college campus without seeing PowerPoint in use. Increasingly, elementary through high school classroom teachers are using PowerPoint presentations to present material to students or are enhancing their students’ learning by teaching them to create their own presentations. Whereas most people think of PowerPoint only for its presentation capabilities, because of its wide availability and numerous features, the software offers many possibilities for use in computer-assisted instruction (Coleman, 2009).
In their presentations preservice teachers use for their assignments, they generally apply familiar methods and prefer a vague writing style supported with a number of texts, pictures or visuals. The related trainings students take during their education lives are quite limited and ineffective. During their education, preservice teachers are not informed about the mechanism of forming a slide or about its design. In addition, there are a limited number of sources that give information about effective presentation techniques to be used for PowerPoint education (Coleman, 2009; Hashemi et. al., 2012). The purpose of this study was to examine the attitudes of preservice teachers towards effective use of PowerPoint in the education process. The research sample of the present study in which the survey method was used included 331 preservice teachers attending ZiyaGökalp Education Faculty at Dicle University. Of all the questions in the questionnaire used as the measurement tool, 10 of them included negative statements, and 20 of them included positive statements. Within the scope of the present study, the reliability
coefficient Cronbach Alpha values for the preservice teachers’ use of PowerPoint were calculated as 0,79. For the analysis of the quantitative data, the frequencies, percentages and
means were calculated and presented in Tables. As a result of the study, the mean scores regarding the preservice teachers’ PowerPoint presentations were at the level of “I don’t agree” ( =3,35). Considering the variable of gender, the attitude mean score of the female teacher candidates were ( =3,357),while it was ( =3,365) for the male preservice teachers. In the light of these results, the attitudes of the female and male preservice teachers regarding their PowerPoint presentations were at the level of “I don’t agree”. The present study revealed that in terms of gender, the female and male preservice teachers’ views about their PowerPoint use were quite close to each other. Based on the preservice teachers’responses in the study, it could be stated that they were not sufficiently knowledgeable about PowerPoint. In other studies conducted, teaching via PowerPoint contributes much more to education than traditional teaching methods (Akdağ and Tok, 2008). The fact that preservice teachers will use these programs as a course material during their education processes and throughout their professional lives increases the importance of their views about this subject. Preservice teachers reported that the ‘contents’ part of presentations used as course materials should be found in slides; that they did not have any idea about the effects used in slides; and that they preferred decorative backgrounds in slides.
Bu araştırmanın amacı öğretmen adaylarının öğrenme öğretme sürecinde etkili powerpoint kullanımlarına ilişkin tutumları incelemektir. Tarama yönteminin kullanıldığı bu araştırmanın örneklemini, Dicle Üniversitesi Ziya Gökalp Eğitim Fakültesinde öğrenim gören toplam 331 öğretmen adayı oluşturmaktadır. Ölçme aracı olarak kullanılan ankette yer alan soruların on tanesi olumsuz, yirmi tanesi olumlu önermeden oluşmaktadır.
