Can Kinesiotape Application Be an Alternative for The Control of Postoperative Oedema and Pain After Implant Surgery?

Introduction: The aim of our study is to investigate the use of kinesiotape for pain and oedema after implant surgery in the literature. Kinesiotape (KT), an elastic therapeutic tape, was developed by Dr. Kenso Kase. KT techniques have been used to support soft tissue injured like joints and muscles, helping to reduce pain and oedema. In maxillofacial surgery, KT using have become popular in recent years. KT have been used not only wisdom tooth surgery but also trauma, orthognathic surgeries and treatment of temporomandibular disorders. Many methods in literature have been used to prevent or reduce postoperative inflammation and related symptoms. These methods are such as corticosteroids, drainage tube placement, the use of different types of incisions, and compression, cryotherapy and low dose laser application. Corticosteroids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) are the most commonly used methods to relieve postoperative complications. However, these drugs can cause gastrointestinal side effects, allergic reactions and increasing bleeding diathesis. Discussion & Conclusion: We could not find any studies on the use of kinesiotape after implant surgery in the literature. However, there are a limited number of current kinesiotape studies investigating its effect on pain and oedema after orthognathic and third molar surgery. In these studies, the effect of lymphatic technique and KT application on complications after dental surgeries has been shown to have a beneficial effect on reducing oedema and pain. Using this technique also might be beneficial for postoperative management after head and neck surgery in accelerating drainage of the tissue reaction or hemorrhage. Many of study about KT in maxillofacial surgery cases declared that; KT application is simple, reduce undesirable side effect and help for the postsurgical improvement following maxillofacial surgery cases. Use of KT also can be encouraging to reduce the amount of NSAIDs and analgesics using after the operation, thus reducing the side effects associated with these drugs. As a result, KT can be promising for pain and oedema due to its features such as easy to use, economical and reducing the side effects of the system. There is a need for studies investigating the effect of KT applications after implant surgeries.

İmplant Cerrahisinde Postoperatif Ödem Ve Ağrının Kontrolünde Kinesiotape Uygulaması Alternatif Olabilir Mi?

Öz

Giriş: Çalışmamızın amacı literatürde implant cerrahisi sonrası ağrı ve ödeme yönelik kinesiotape kullanımını araştırmaktır. Elastik terapötik bir bant olan Kinesiotape (KT), 1970'lerde Dr. Kenso Kase tarafından icat edildi. KT teknikleri, eklemler ve kaslar gibi yaralanmış yumuşak dokuları desteklemek için ağrı ve ödemi azaltmaya yardımcı olarak kullanılmıştır. Maksillofasiyal cerrahide KT kullanımı son yıllarda popüler olmaya başlamıştır. KT sadece gömülü diş cerrahisinde değil aynı zamanda travma, ortognatik cerrahi ve temporomandibular bozuklukların tedavisinde de kullanılmıştır. Postoperatif inflamasyonu ve ilgili semptomları önlemek veya azaltmak için literatürde birçok yöntem kullanılmıştır. Bu yöntemler kortikosteroidler, drenaj tüpü yerleştirme, farklı tipte insizyonların kullanımı, kompresyon, kriyoterapi ve düşük doz lazer uygulamasıdır. Kortikosteroidler ve non-steroidal antiinflamatuar ilaçlar (NSAİİ) postoperatif komplikasyonları rahatlatmak için en sık kullanılan yöntemlerdir. Ancak, bu ilaçlar gastrointestinal yan etkilere, alerjik reaksiyonlara ve kanama eğilimine neden olabilir. Tartışma ve Sonuç: Literatürde implant cerrahileri sonrasında kinesiotape kullanımı ile ilgili çalışmalara rastlayamadık. Fakat ortognatik ve üçüncü molar cerrahisi gibi sonrasında ağrı ve ödeme yönelik etkisini araştıran sınırlı sayıda da olsa güncel kinesiotape çalışmaları vardır. Bu çalışmalarda lenfatik tekniği ile KT uygulanmasının dental cerrahiler sonrası komplikasyonlar üzerindeki etkisi, ödem ve ağrının azaltılmasında faydalı bir etkiye sahip olduğu gösterildi. Bu teknik kullanılarak aynı zamanda, baş ve boyun cerrahileri sonrası postoperatif kanama veya doku reaksiyonu yönetiminde ve drenajın sağlanmasında yararlı olabilmektedir. Maksillofasiyal cerrahi olgularında KT ile ilgili yapılan çalışmaların çoğu; KT uygulamasının basit, istenmeyen yan etkileri azalttığı ve maksillofasiyal cerrahi vakalarının ardından cerrahi sonrası iyileşmeye yardımcı olduğunu bildirmiştir. KT kullanımı ayrıca operasyondan sonra NSAİİ ve analjeziklerin miktarını azaltmaya ve böylece bu ilaçlarla ilişkili yan etkileri azaltmaya teşvik edici olabilir. Sonuç olarak; KT'nin kullanımı uygulaması kolay, ekonomik ve sistemin yan etkilerini azaltabilme gibi özelliklerinden dolayı ağrı ve ödeme yönelik umut verici olabilir. İmplant cerrahileri sonrasında etkisini araştıran çalışmalara ihtiyaç vardır.
