Pediatric Neuroblastoma: Survival, Mortality, and Surgical Outcomes at a Tertiary Care Center

Öz

Abstract Introduction This study aimed to evaluate the pathological, clinical, and demographic characteristics of pediatric neuroblastoma cases treated at a tertiary care center in eastern Turkey and to to describe survival, relapse, mortality outcomes, and surgical management characteristics. Materials and Methods This retrospective study was done using the medical records of pediatric patients diagnosed with neuroblastoma and followed up at the Department of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology, Van Yuzuncu Yil University Dursun Odabas Medical Center , between January 1, 2010, and April 25, 2025. Information included sex, age, age at diagnosis, risk group (low, intermediate, high), MYCN amplification status, bone marrow involvement, relapse status, treatment regimen, International Neuroblastoma Staging System (INSS) stage, survival (in years), and mortality. IBM SPSS Statistics 25.0 and Python 3.11 were used for data analysis. Data on surgical interventions, including type of procedure and frequency of resection, were also recorded. Results A total of 20 pediatric neuroblastoma cases were included. The median age at diagnosis was 3.0 years (IQR 1.33–3.88), and the median survival was 2 years. Fifty-five percent of the cases had stage 4 disease, 40% stage 3 disease, and 5% stage 1 disease. The proportion of high-risk patients was 70%, moderate-risk 25%, and low-risk 5%. During follow-up, 50% of patients died, while relapse occurred in 40%. Mortality and relapse were particularly common in the high-risk group. Surgical resection was performed in 80% of patients, predominantly adrenalectomy. Conclusion Our study revealed that among pediatric neuroblastoma patients followed at our center, high-stage and high-risk groups predominated, and mortality and relapse were significantly higher in this group. Our data emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis, multidisciplinary treatment, and appropriate surgical management, and aims to contribute to the literature.
