Health Literacy and Patient Learning Needs Among Otolaryngology Patients: A Cross-Sectional Study

Öz

Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the levels of health literacy and patient education needs among patients receiving treatment and care at an otolaryngology clinic and to examine the relationship between these variables. Method: This descriptive and correlational study was conducted between December 15, 2025, and April 24, 2026, at the otolaryngology clinic of a state university’s Faculty of Medicine Hospital and was completed with 109 patients. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews conducted 24–48 hours before discharge using the “Patient Information Form,” the “Health Literacy Scale,” and the “Patient Learning Needs Scale.” Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 27.0, and statistical significance was set at a p-value of less than 0.05. Results: The mean total score on the Health Literacy Scale was 34.56 ± 8.91, while the mean total score on the Patient Education Needs Scale was 206.96 ± 32.71. A low-level positive and statistically significant correlation was found between the total score of the Health Literacy Scale and the total score of the Patient Learning Needs Scale, as well as some of their subscales (r = 0.232–0.269; p < 0.05). Conclusions: There is a significant positive relationship between health literacy and learning needs in otolaryngology patients. While age and education level were found to influence both variables, health literacy also varied according to income status, presence of chronic disease, admission type. It is recommended that patients’ health literacy levels and learning needs be evaluated together when planning discharge education. Keywords: Health literacy, discharge planning, inpatients, nursing, patient education, learning needs.
