Ekolojik Ağda Ontolojik Tasarım: Miselyumla Birlikte Tasarlanma

Öz

Modern tasarım pratiği, uzun bir süre Kartezyen özne-nesne ikiliğine dayalı bir paradigma üzerinden şekillenmiştir. Bu paradigma sonucunda gelişen insan merkezli yaklaşım, dünyaya ekolojik olarak çok zarar vermiştir. Tasarımcılar da tasarladıkları nesneler ve sistemler ile maddi dünyamızın görünümünü ve işleyişini değiştirerek buna sebep olan aktörlerden birisidir. Bu çalışma da bu yaklaşıma bir eleştiri getiren Tony Fry’ın Tasarım Ontolojisi yaklaşımı ile Timothy Morton’ın Ağ kavramını bir arada ele almayı ve bu kesişimin çağdaş ekolojik tasarım pratiklerinde nasıl somutlaştığını sorgulamayı amaçlamaktadır. Bu doğrultuda çalışma iki bölümden oluşur. İlk bölümde, Fry ve Morton'ın teorik çerçeveleri üç katman üzerinden ele alınacaktır: Tasarımcının, kullanıcının ve dünyanın tasarlanmış olması. İlk bölüm için Kavram Analizi kullanılmıştır çünkü bu yöntem Fry ve Morton’un kavramlarını derinlemesine analiz edilmesine olanak tanır.İkinci bölümde ise, bu teorik tartışma, yine bu üç başlık altında miselyum tabanlı somut tasarım örnekleri üzerinden somutlaştırılacak ve ontolojik tasarımın çağdaş tasarım pratiğindeki yansımaları tartışılacaktır. Bu bölümde ise soyut felsefi argümanların somut tasarım pratiğindeki karşılığını görünür kılmak amacıyla Tekil Vaka Çalışması yöntemine başvurulmuş ve son dönem ekolojik tasarım literatüründe öne çıkan miselyum tabanlı tasarım pratikleri odak noktası olarak seçilmiştir. Sonuç olarak çalışma, tasarımı tek yönlü ve hiyerarşik bir eylem olmaktan çıkarıp insan-dışı aktörlerin de eşit katılım gösterdiği bir birliktelik pratiğine dönüştürmeyi önermektedir. Ayrıca bu dönüşümün kapitalist üretim ilişkileri içindeki sınırlarına ve yeşil aklama riskine değinerek gelecek araştırmalar için politik ve etik bir duruş çağrısı yapmaktadır.

Ontological Design in the Ecological Mesh: Being Designed with Mycelium

Öz

Modern design practice has long been shaped by a paradigm based on the Cartesian subject-object duality. The human-centered approach that developed as a result of this paradigm has caused great ecological harm to the world. Designers, by altering the appearance and functioning of our material world through the objects and systems they design, are among the actors responsible for this. This study aims to bring together Tony Fry’s concept of being-designed, which critiques this approach, and Timothy Morton’s concept of the mesh, and to question how this intersection manifests in contemporary ecological design practices. Accordingly, the study consists of two parts. In the first part, the theoretical frameworks of Fry and Morton will be addressed through three layers: the being-designed of the designer, the user, and the world. The conceptual analysis method was used for the first part because it allows for an in-depth analysis of Fry’s and Morton’s concepts. In the second part, this theoretical discussion will be materialized through concrete mycelium-based design examples under the same three headings, and the reflections of ontological design on contemporary design practice will be discussed. In this section, the single case study method was used to make the counterparts of abstract philosophical arguments visible in concrete design practice, and mycelium-based design practices, which have come to the fore in the recent ecological design literature, were chosen as the focal point. In conclusion, the study proposes to transform design from a unidirectional and hierarchical act into a practice of coexistence in which non-human actors also participate equally. Furthermore, by addressing the limitations of this transformation within capitalist production relations and the risk of greenwashing, it calls for a political and ethical stance for future research.
