A Qualitative Study on Occupational Health and Safety Perceptions of Construction Workers

Öz

This study aims to deeply examine the occupational health and safety (OSH) perceptions, experiences and attitudes of construction sector employees from a qualitative perspective through interviews conducted with workers working at an ongoing public housing construction site in Erzurum. In the study, 7 different questions were asked to personal protective equipment, lack of education, individual indifference and insufficient institutional control were the main reasons for the weak perception. In addition, the inconsistency between individual risk perception and safe behavior was striking. According to the research results, it was determined that continuous and practical training, strengthening state inspections and employers' adoption of OSH as an institutional responsibility are of critical importance in increasing OSH awareness. It was emphasized that reward-punishment mechanisms should be used effectively in order to make the OSH culture permanent. As a result, it was revealed that individual awareness, institutional responsibility and public inspection work in coordination for a safe and sustainable work environment in the construction sector.
