Testing The Abrams Curve Hypothesis For The Economy Of Türkiye Using The Fourier Cointegration Test

Öz

Another purpose of public expenditures, which are a macroeconomic intervention tool, is their contribution to employment. In this sense, the effect of public expenditures is a subject that is analyzed frequently by researchers. This study aims to reveal the relationship between public expenditures and unemployment using Türkiye’s annual data for the period 1988–2023. As a methodology, unit root tests based on classical and Fourier functions of variables and stationarity tests were performed. Tsong, Leei Tsai and Hu (2016) Fourier Cointegration test was used to examine the relationship between variables. As a result of the study, it was concluded that there is a relationship between unemployment and public expenditure variables in the economy of Türkiye, and that a 1% increase in public expenditures leads to a 1.234% increase in the unemployment rate.

Abrams Eğrisi Hipotezinin Türkiye Ekonomisi İçin Fourier Eşbütünleşme Testi İle Sınanması

Öz

Makroekonomik bir müdahale aracı olan kamu harcamalarının bir amacı da istihdama olan katkısıdır. Bu anlamda kamu harcamalarının etkisi araştırmacılar tarafından çokça analiz edilen bir husustur. Bu çalışma, Türkiye’nin 1988- 2023 yıllık verileri ile kamu harcamalarının işsizlik ile olan ilişkisini ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır. Metodoloji olarak öncelikli olarak değişkenlerin klasik ve Fourier fonksiyonlarına dayalı birim kök testleri ile durağanlık sınaması yapılmaktadır. Değişkenler arasındaki ampirik analizde ise Tsong, Leei Tsai ve Hu (2016) Fourier Eşbütünleşme testi kullanılmaktadır. Çalışma sonucunda Türkiye ekonomisinde işsizlik ve kamu harcamaları değişkenleri arasında uzun dönemli ilişkinin olduğu bulgusuna ulaşılmaktadır. Bu bağlamda kamu harcamalarındaki artış işsizlik oranında da artışa neden olmaktadır.
