A Theoretical Perspective on Concept Teaching in Social Studies Education: An Examination of the Michaelis and Garcia Concept Teaching Strategy

Öz

This study aims to examine the concept teaching strategy developed by Michaelis and Garcia within a theoretical framework, based on the importance of concept teaching in social studies education. The research was conducted using a qualitative research approach, specifically through document review and content analysis. In this context, the national and international literature on concept teaching, social studies education, and teaching strategies, as well as the 2024 Social Studies Curriculum, were analyzed. The findings revealed that Michaelis and Garcia’s concept teaching strategy approaches concept teaching as a phased and systematic process; it incorporates the use of example–non-example scenarios, classification, problem-solving, and inquiry-based activities. It was found that the strategy offers a framework that supports students in addressing concepts not merely at the definitional level but within various contexts and relationships. Additionally, it was determined that the structural characteristics of the strategy align with the conceptual learning, inquiry, and student-centered teaching approaches emphasized in the 2024 Social Studies Curriculum. This study presents an original analysis that theoretically examines the aforementioned strategy within the context of the 2024 curriculum; it establishes a theoretical framework that teachers and researchers can utilize in concept instruction.
