A Comparison of Nutritional Habits of Students of Sports Sciences and Health Sciences Faculties of a University

Öz

Objectives: This study aimed to compare the nutritional habits of students from the Faculty of Sport Sciences and the Faculty of Health Sciences at a university. Materials and Methods: This descriptive and comparative study included 207 students enrolled in the Faculties of Sport and Health Sciences. Data were collected using a “Sociodemographic Form” and the “Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire (DEBQ),” which assessed participants’ sociodemographic characteristics and eating behaviors. Parametric tests were employed for data analysis. Results: Among the participants, 56% were female; 51.2% were studying in the Faculty of Sport Sciences, and 48.3% in the Faculty of Health Sciences. A total of 63.8% of students reported not eating regularly, while 42.5% stated that they most frequently skipped breakfast. According to BMI classification, 71.3% of the students were in the normal range, and 22.9% were overweight. The mean total DEBQ score was 85.05±21.65. Among the subscales, the highest mean score was observed in the Emotional Eating subscale (31.77±13.15). A significant difference was found between gender and Restrained Eating scores (p=0.04), with women scoring higher than men. BMI was significantly associated with the total DEBQ score and the scores of the Restrained and Emotional Eating subscales (p<0.05)."Additionally, faculty-based differences were noted: students from the Faculty of Health Sciences had significantly higher total DEBQ, Restrained, and Emotional Eating scores compared to students from the Faculty of Sport Sciences (p<0.05). Conclusion: The study concludes that eating habits vary based on factors such as faculty, gender, and BMI.
