A Placental Ritual: Evaluation of Women's Knowledge, Attitudes and Approaches Towards Lotus Birth

Objective: This qualitative study was conducted to evaluate women's knowledge, attitudes, and approaches toward lotus birth, a placental ritual. Materials and Methods: The sample group consisted of 31 women recruited via social media who agreed to participate in the study. Data were collected using a Descriptive Information Form and a Semi-Structured Interview Form. Colaizzi’s phenomenological interpretation method was employed for data analysis. Findings: Analysis of the qualitative data yielded 4 themes and 11 subcodes. The mean age of the participants was 35.54±18.87 (min:20, max:48). Of the women, 45.2% were homemakers, while 38.7% were married. Obstetric characteristics revealed that 58.1% had children. While 35.4% (n=11) had heard of lotus birth before, only 9.6% (n=3) considered this method reliable. Participants acknowledged potential benefits, such as preventing hyperbilirubinemia/anemia (19.3%), facilitating stem cell transfer to the baby (35.4%), and easing the transition to extrauterine life (16.1%). However, they also raised concerns, including the difficulty of care (64.5%), infection risk (54.8%), and foul odor (61.2%). Conclusion: The findings indicate that women's knowledge about lotus birth is insufficient, and they do not find this method feasible. Additionally, women perceived it as physically and socially harmful, with potential for stigmatization. It is recommended that healthcare professionals enhance their knowledge on this topic to provide accurate and effective counseling to women.

Plasental Bir Ritüel: Kadınların Lotus Doğuma Yönelik Bilgi, Tutum ve Yaklaşımlarının Değerlendirilmesi

Öz

Amaç: Nitel desendeki bu araştırma, kadınların plasental bir ritüel olan lotus doğuma yönelik bilgi, tutum ve yaklaşımlarının değerlendirilmesi amacıyla yürütülmüştür. Gereç ve Yöntem: Araştırmanın örneklem grubuna sosyal medya aracılığıyla ulaşılan, araştırmaya katılmayı kabul eden 31 kadın dahil edilmiştir. Veriler, Tanıtıcı Bilgi Formu ve Yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme formuyla elde edilmiştir. Veri analizi yapılırken Colaizzi’nin fenomenolojik yorumlama yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Bulgular: Nitel verilerin analizi sonucunda 4 tema ve 11 alt kod oluşturuldu. Çalışmaya katılan kadınların yaş ortalamalarının 35,54±18,87 (min:20, max:48) olduğu tespit edildi. Kadınların %45,2’sinin ev hanımı olduğu belirlenirken %38,7’sinin evli olduğu saptandı. Obstetrik özellikleri sorgulandığında %58,1’inin çocuk sahibi olduğu belirlendi. Katılımcıların %35,4’ünün (n:11) lotus doğumu daha önce duyduğu saptanırken yalnızca %9,6’sının (n:3) bu doğum yöntemini güvenilir bulduğu saptandı. Katılımcılar bu uygulamanın; hiperbilirubinemi/anemiyi önleyeceği (%19,3), kök hücrenin bebeğe geçeceği (%35,4) ve ekstrauterin hayata adaptasyonu kolaylaştıracağı (%16,1) gibi yararları olduğunu belirtirlerken bakımın zor olacağı (%64,5), enfeksiyon riskinin bulunduğu (%54,8) ve kötü kokuya sebep olacağı (%61,2) gibi zararları olduğunu düşündükleri saptandı. Sonuç: Araştırma sonucuna göre kadınların lotus doğum hakkındaki bilgi düzeylerinin yeterli olmadığı ve bu yöntemi uygulanabilir bulmadıkları saptandı. Ayrıca kadınların bu yöntemi hem fiziksel hem sosyolojik olarak da zararlı buldukları ve stigmatizasyona neden olacağını düşündükleri tespit edildi. Sağlık profesyonellerinin bu konu hakkındaki bilgi düzeylerinin arttırılması, kadınlara doğru ve etkin şekilde danışmanlık vermeleri önerilmektedir.
