Awareness and Knowledge of Human Papillomavirus, Human Papillomavirus Vaccination, and Cervical Cancer Precursors Among Healthcare Workers

Öz

Objective: This study aimed to assess the knowledge and awareness levels of healthcare professionals regarding Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and HPV vaccination, both of which are crucial in preventing cervical cancer. Awareness of HPV is vital for improving public health and increasing vaccination rates. Material and Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted from December 2024 to January 2025 at the University of Health Sciences Şişli Hamidiye Etfal Training and Research Hospital. A total of 195 healthcare workers, including obstetricians, non-obstetric physicians, and midwives, voluntarily completed a structured questionnaire. The survey included 45 items covering sociodemographic data and HPV-related knowledge. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 28.0. Descriptive statistics were employed, and comparisons between groups were made using chi-square tests, ANOVA, and Mann-Whitney U tests where appropriate. Power analysis with G*Power confirmed that the study had 80% power to detect a medium effect size. Results: Among midwives, 43% had received the HPV vaccine, and 38.4% had recommended it to someone else; however, 89.2% reported that they lacked sufficient knowledge. For non-obstetric physicians, 53% had been vaccinated and 81% had recommended the vaccine, yet 95% noted inadequate knowledge. Conversely, 66% of obstetricians had received the vaccine and 98.3% had recommended it. Obstetricians also demonstrated significantly better knowledge regarding HPV's asymptomatic progression and untreatability compared to other groups (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Healthcare professionals show insufficient knowledge about HPV and HPV vaccination. Targeted educational programs for midwives and non-obstetric physicians are essential to raise awareness, promote vaccine acceptance, and support cervical cancer prevention efforts within the community.
