PERCEIVED STIGMA OF NURSES WORKING IN A PANDEMIC HOSPITAL

Objective: It has been observed that the nurses responsible for providing one-to-one care with the health workers, who are at the forefront during the Covid-19 pandemic process, are exposed to stigmatizing attitudes and behaviors while being declared heroes. The study aims to determine the perception and experience of stigmatization of nurses working in pandemic clinics and their feelings, thoughts, and perspectives regarding stigmatization during the covid-19 pandemic process. Method: This study was qualitative with 15 participant nurses. Data were obtained through semi-structured serial interviews and analysed using the content analysis method. Results: The data were analyzed according to the perception of stigma and the views of nurses caring for COVID-19 patients under four themes: ‘stigmatizing attitudes and behaviors’, ‘emotional reactions to stigmatization’, ‘support systems’, and ‘expectations’. Conclusion: The nurses have been an essential component of the professional healthcare team who are at the frontlines of the battle with Covid-19 working with intense and long hours during the pandemic period were exposed to stigma by society and their families. Therefore, the nurses experienced unstable emotional oscillations in their moods like unhappiness, withdrawal, burnout, or anger.
