Assessment of antropometric measurements and metabolic syndrome in acute biliary pancreatitis

Öz

In the etiology of acut pancreatitis, the importance of gallstones are known. The relation between Metabolic Syndrome (MS) and gallstones were investigated in many studies. In this study the aim was to investigate the relation between biliary pancreatitis and MS. In the study 43 patient (34 female and 9 male) were included who had diagnosed as acute pancreatitis with clinical and laboratuary results. Gallstones were confirmed radiologically and acut cholesistitis cases were excepted. Amylase, lypase, insulin, Hb A1C, HOMA results and; body mass index, hip and waist circumferance measurements were recorded. According to hypertension, diabetes mellitus and dislipidemia status the MS had diagnosed via NCEP/ATP metabolic syndrome criteria. The average age was 58.4 and female patients posed the majority (79%, p<0.01). The amylase and lypase results were: 495-5640 U/L and 13-5386 U/L., respectively. 31 of 43 patients were obese/morbid obese (72.1%, p<0.01). Obese/morbid obese female patient ratio was higher than the males' (p<0.05). In 40 cases waist diameter was above the limits (93%), diabetes mellitus/hyperglisemi were in 17 cases (39.5%) and hypertension in 26 cases (60.5%). In 9 cases (20.9%) hypertriglyseridemia and in 26 cases (60.5%) low HDL values were recorded. In 20 cases (46.5%) positivity of MS were determined and this ratio was 55.6% in male and 44.1% in female patients with pancreatitis. According to the results of the study there was an important relation between MS and biliary pancreatitis, the ratio of MS was higher in male patients from the prevalance of the society. High waist circumferance, obesity, hypertension, low values of HDL and diabetes mellitus has come to the fore in the biliary pancreatitis. As a result the struggle against MS as a public health problem is of great importance in the prevention of gallstones and biliary pancreatitis.
