Invisible Lives, Visible Struggles: A Digital Analysis of Immigrant Women in Turkiye

In contemporary society, social media platforms play a pivotal role in connecting individuals with shared experiences, fostering solidarity and support networks. In Türkiye, in particular, these platforms have had a profound impact on the women's rights movement. However, they are equally effective in disseminating misinformation and exacerbating the marginalization of targeted groups. This research seeks to explore the media visibility and experiences of dehumanization, sexism, and precarity among three distinct groups of refugee women in Türrkiye, with a focus on the negative impact of social media platforms, particularly X. The study aims to uncover the commonalities and differences in the challenges faced by Ukrainian, Syrian, and Afghan women in Türkiye. Methodologically, the research is grounded in thematic analysis, employing data from Google Trends and X. In the first phase, Google Trends data from 2021, 2022, and 2023 were analyzed to identify spikes in online searches for these three refugee groups using specific keywords. In the second phase, it was observed that commentary on X concerning refugee women correlated with the peaks in Google Trends data. In the final phase, the data were subjected to thematic analysis. This approach seeks to highlight the prevalence of dehumanizing and sexist remarks driven by prejudice, made by individuals with internet access, and to examine how social media platforms shape social perceptions and attitudes toward these refugee groups. This research aspires to contribute to a deeper understanding of the experiences of refugee women in Türkiye, promote respect for their human rights, and raise societal awareness.

Görünmeyen Hayatlar, Görünür Mücadeleler: Türkiye'deki Göçmen Kadınların Dijital Analizi

Öz

Günümüz toplumunda, sosyal medya platformları, benzer deneyimlere sahip bireyleri birbirine bağlamada, dayanışma ve destek ağları oluşturma konusunda önemli bir rol oynamaktadır. Özellikle Türkiye'de, bu platformlar kadın hakları hareketi üzerinde derin bir etkiye sahip olmuştur. Bununla birlikte, aynı derecede etkili bir şekilde yanlış bilgi yaymakta ve hedeflenen grupların marjinalleşmesini artırmaktadır. Bu araştırma, Türkiye'deki üç farklı mülteci kadın grubunun medya görünürlüğünü ve insanlık dışı muamele, cinsiyetçilik ve güvencesizlik deneyimlerini, özellikle sosyal medya platformlarının, özellikle X'in olumsuz etkisine odaklanarak incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Çalışma, Ukraynalı, Suriyeli ve Afgan kadınların Türkiye'de karşılaştıkları zorlukların ortak noktalarını ve farklılıklarını ortaya çıkarmayı hedeflemektedir. Metodolojik olarak, araştırma tematik analize dayanmaktadır ve Google Trends ile X'ten elde edilen veriler kullanılmaktadır. İlk aşamada, 2021, 2022 ve 2023 yıllarına ait Google Trends verileri, belirli anahtar kelimeler kullanılarak bu üç mülteci gruba yönelik çevrimiçi aramalardaki artışları belirlemek için analiz edilmiştir. İkinci aşamada, X'te mülteci kadınlara yönelik yapılan yorumların, Google Trends verilerindeki zirve noktalarıyla örtüştüğü gözlemlenmiştir. Son aşamada ise, veriler tematik analize tabi tutulmuştur. Bu yaklaşım, internet erişimine sahip bireyler tarafından yapılan önyargılı, insanlık dışı ve cinsiyetçi yorumların yaygınlığını vurgulamayı ve sosyal medya platformlarının bu mülteci gruplarına yönelik toplumsal algıları ve tutumları nasıl şekillendirdiğini incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bu araştırma, Türkiye'deki mülteci kadınların deneyimlerine daha derin bir anlayış kazandırmayı, insan haklarına saygıyı teşvik etmeyi ve toplumsal farkındalığı artırmayı hedeflemektedir.
