Examination of the Limitations and Inconsistencies of Different Representations of Women Infiltrating Popular Cinema through the Film Aile Arasında (Among the Family)

Öz

Popular cinema creates a fictional world by reproducing the outside world and reality about the place and duties of women in society. Films have an important function in explaining and reinforcing women by showing them where they are.In recent years, many films have been made in Turkish popular cinema that center on women and women's stories. When we look at the women in these films, they are often portrayed as strong and economically independent characters. These characters are also sensitive to gender and human rights issues. However, although these female characters are shown as independent in these films, they do not fully overcome the limitations of popular narratives. Especially in these types of films, it seems that women's biggest dreams are marriage. In other words, women's stories in these films center around marriage and thus become limited by it. It is possible to say that these films in today's popular cinema in Turkey show the typical characteristics of classic narrative cinema, also called Yeşilçam, and reinforce the institution of marriage rather than question it. This study examines one of these film examples, “Among the Family” (2017), which puts female characters at the center of the story. In this film, written by Gulse Birsel, one of the most well-known female screenwriters in Turkey, female characters are portrayed with various identities. This research looks at how women of different identities in the film are represented and how their views on the institution of marriage are presented. Thus, this study tries to expose the limitations and differences of the film which puts women's stories at the center in popular cinema culture.
