Feminist Conceptualisations of Motherhood: From a Means of Subordination to Experience and Performance

Öz

This study analyses feminist perspectives on motherhood under the headings of (1) motherhood as a means of subordination, (2) motherhood as an experience and (3) motherhood as a performance. Under the first heading, it examines the perspective of early feminists, who did not subject the institutional aspects of motherhood to critical scrutiny but made innovative proposals for the period. It then discusses the perspective that evaluates motherhood as an obstacle to women’s emancipation by differentiating the biological and cultural dimensions of motherhood and that shapes the general direction of the second-wave feminist movement. Under the heading of motherhood as an experience, it presents the way in which difference feminism, which developed out of the second-wave feminism, dealt with motherhood and, the discussions of the third-wave feminist movement that draw attention to the diversity of mothering experiences and treats motherhood as a means for women’s self-realisation. Under the heading of motherhood as a performance, it explores the perspective that emerged from Judith Butler’s idea, which does not see the biological aspect of motherhood, and emphasises the agent ‘mother’ emerging from the discursive matrix of motherhood. The study concludes that feminist discourse on motherhood has moved away from seeing motherhood solely as a biological or spiritual/moral role/identity towards understanding it as a fluid role that can be adopted, rejected or combined with other roles/identities.

Feminizmin Anneliği Anlamlandırma Biçimleri: Tahakküm Aracından Deneyim ve Performansa

Öz

Bu çalışma, anneliğe ilişkin feminist bakış açılarını (1) tahakküm aracı olarak annelik, (2) deneyim olarak annelik ve (3) performans olarak annelik başlıkları altında incelemektedir. İlk başlık altında anneliğin kurumsal yönlerini eleştirel bir incelemeye tabi tutmayan ancak dönemine yenilikçi önerilerde bulunan erken dönem feministlerin anneliğe bakış açısını açıkladıktan sonra anneliğin biyolojik ve kültürel boyutlarını ayrıştırarak; anneliği, kadının özgürleşmesi önünde engel olarak değerlendiren ve ikinci dalga feminist harekete genel yönünü veren bakış açısını tartışmaktadır. Bir deneyim olarak annelik başlığı altında ikinci dalga içerisinden gelişen farklılık feminizminin anneliği ele alma şeklini ve önünü açtığı üçüncü dalga feminist hareketin annelik deneyiminin çeşitliliğine dikkat çekerek onu kadının kendini gerçekleştirmesinin bir yolu olarak ele alan tartışmalarını aktarmaktadır. Bir performans olarak annelik başlığı altında ise Judith Butler'ın düşüncesi üzerinden gelişen anneliğin biyolojik yönünü görmeyen ve anneliğe dair söylemsel matrisin içinden çıkan fail ‘anne’ye vurgu yapan bakış açısını ele almaktadır. Nihayetinde çalışma, anneliğe ilişkin feminist söylemin, anneliği yalnızca biyolojik ya da ahlaki bir rol olarak görmekten uzaklaşarak, onu benimsenebilen, reddedilebilen ya da diğer kimliklerle birleştirilebilen akışkan bir rol olarak anlamaya doğru ilerlediği sonucuna varmaktadır.
