The purpose of this article is to present to the reader the metaphysical elements, meaning those which are beyond sensory perception, of the principles of faith in the Qur?an. Initially, the importance given by the Qur?an to man?s mind and his reasoning ability is explained. After which an evaluation of the metaphysical elements of the principles of faith is made. Later on, the examples in the Qur?an for principles of faith, such as faith in God, the prophets and the hereafter, which are commonly defined as the ?three principles? (al-usul al-salasah), are analyzed and the idea of the absolute unknown is evaluated in a new way. Finally, it is explained that concerning principles of faith, man should reach for the unknown (gayb) in light of the known (shahadah); and it is emphasized that only this kind of belief can give guidance to man?s life.
