FROM THE EARLY REPUBLIC TO THE DIGITAL AGE: GENDERED VISIBILITY, IDEOLOGY, AND TRANSFORMATION IN TURKISH MEDIA
Öz
This study explores the ideological construction of femininity in Turkish media by comparatively analysing early Republican newspapers and contemporary Instagram posts. Using a qualitative content analysis approach, the research identifies visual and discursive themes across two periods, revealing both continuity and rupture in the representation of women. In the Republican era, the female figure was constructed as a symbol of modernity and civic motherhood, confined within the moral and nationalistic goals of the state. In contrast, today's digital media portrays women as neoliberal subjects navigating aesthetics, self-branding, and algorithmic visibility. Despite contextual shifts, the study finds a persistent logic of conditional visibility: women's public presence is celebrated only when aligned with prevailing ideological or commercial frameworks. This research contributes to feminist media studies by offering a diachronic understanding of gendered media discourses in Türkiye.
