THE 1930 BELGRADE ALL-SOKOL SLET IN THE LIGHT OF TURKISH ARCHIVAL SOURCES AND THE SOKOLSKI GLASNIK NEWSPAPER
Öz
The 1930 Belgrade All-Sokol Slet stood out not merely as a gymnastics and sporting event but as a major social manifestation of national unity, Pan-Slav solidarity and the ideological objectives of the Yugoslav state. The event acquired an international dimension through the participation of delegations not only from various regions of Yugoslavia but also from countries such as Czechoslovakia, Poland and Romania. This study examines the Slet in detail, beginning with its preparatory phase and covering its organizational structure, official ceremonies, athletic and cultural performances, as well as its broader impact on public opinion. One of the most striking aspects of the 1930 Belgrade All-Sokol Slet was that it took place shortly after the establishment of the Sokol of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and under the patronage of King Alexander I. The King’s personal attendance at the ceremonies served as a powerful indication of the state’s support for the event and the political significance attributed to the Sokol movement. This circumstance created an important opportunity to promote the organization nationwide, expand its activities and strengthen its institutional framework. Beyond encouraging the physical development of youth, the Slet conveyed strong messages of discipline, solidarity, social responsibility and the reinforcement of a shared national identity. The program offered a rich combination of parades, mass gymnastic displays, various sports competitions, cultural events and official speeches. Drawing on the archival sources of the Republic of Turkey and Sokolski Glasnik, the official journal of the Sokol of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia (SKY), this study investigates the entire process of the Slet chronologically, from its preparations to its conclusion.
