Paying attention to current environmental sensations contributes to the discovery of new ideas and relationships, as well as the development of an individual’s self-capacity and psychological resources. In contrast, mind wandering, which involves shifting attention—either deliberately or involuntarily—from external sensations to self-generated thoughts in various contexts and contents, may prevent individuals from experiencing such positive psychological changes. This study aims to examine the indirect relationships of attachment dimensions with authenticity and self-concept clarity through mind wandering. The research involved 334 participants (241 females, 93 males; average age = 25.04), recruited through a convenience sampling method. In this online research, we used various tools for data collection, including a Demographic Information Form, Experiences in Close Relationships Questionnaire—Revised, Authenticity Scale, Self-Concept Clarity Scale, Mind Excessively Wandering Scale, Deliberate and Spontaneous Mind Wandering Scale, and Deliberate and Spontaneous Mind Wandering in Positive/Negative Experiences Form. We conducted hypothesis testing through structural equation modeling. The findings indicated that the relationships between attachment anxiety and both authenticity and self-concept clarity were explained by excessive and involuntary mind wandering. In these indirect relationships, involuntary mind wandering, particularly during positive experiences, played a more decisive role. Moreover, deliberate mind wandering in positive situations explained the relationships of both attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance with self-related outcomes. We discussed these connections within the framework of Attachment Theory and the “Broaden-and-Build” theory, which examines how positive emotions contribute to the development of enduring personal strengths.
