Mental Toughness in Athletes: A Comprehensive Review

Yıl 2025, Cilt: 2 Sayı: 1, 1 - 12, 28.03.2025

This review aims to examine the importance, development, and effects of mental toughness on athletes' performance. Mental toughness is a critical factor that directly influences athletes' abilities to cope with stress, sustain performance, and maintain psychological well-being (Gervais, Smith & Jones, 2004; Yıldız & Kılıç, 2017). The literature indicates that mental toughness is not only an individual trait but also a dynamic construct shaped through interactions with environmental factors and training techniques (Çelik, 2015). The research demonstrates that mental toughness plays a significant role in enhancing athletes' athletic performance, coping with stress, and improving overall psychological well-being (Kılıç & Yılmaz, 2019). It has been identified that training techniques effectively increase mental toughness, and that social support and personal factors also shape this process (Lindsay, 2014). Additionally, mental toughness is shown to be linked not only to athletes' physical performance but also to their psychological health (Smith, 2020). In line with these findings, future research is recommended to explore the relationship between mental toughness, various sports disciplines, training processes, and social support in greater depth (Gervais, Smith & Jones, 2004). In practice, training programs and psychological strategies designed to enhance athletes' mental toughness should be incorporated into training sessions to improve both physical and mental performance (Yıldız, Kılıç & Demir, 2017).
