Flow theory describes the psychological aspects of the state, in which one performs a
task with intrinsic motivation, intense concentration, a deep sense of joy and a feeling
of satisfaction. This study, which stemmed from the notion that flow theory could be
a beneficial resource for improving music performance, aims to determine various
flow dimensions, to discuss the relationship of flow with music and performance and
to present suggestions towards improving music performance. Flow properties are
explained through a literature review and these properties are evaluated in the context of
performance. It is determined that flow is beneficial for music performance in the areas
of attention, motivation and concentration. Flow also has positive effects on performers
through its nature which includes ease of movement, a deep sense of satisfaction and
positive mood. Flow disables negative mental thoughts and physical symptoms associated
with performance anxiety, therefore it is presented as a constructive concept for musical
performance anxiety. In light of all these findings, various notions and methods, such
as determining goals, prioritizing intrinsic motivation, improving focus and awareness,
visual recording and imagery are suggested towards helping with performers’ experience
of flow and the enhancement of music education.
