Organology is a science that studies the musical instruments. It is rare to find organologic
published scientific resources of Traditional Turkish Music. The aim of this study is to
examine all studies in the literature about the Traditional Turkish Music instruments, in
the organologic sense to demonstrate this progress. In this study, some conclusions were
reached using literature review and interviews with experts on the field. According to the
results of the study, it is concluded that the organologic studies in the West is different from
the ones in Turkey. The emergence of the Organology as a science coincides with the 17th
century. But serious scientific studies in Turkey have started in the 20th century. In Turkey it
has seen that written works about instruments are few, works entered into literature of this
period were writen after compliation works of introducing instruments, they are first studies
giving information about instruments. Furthermore, after establisment of conservatory
providing Turkish Music education, academic studies about Traditional Turkish Music and
instruments began. Due to the late scientific studies related to those instruments, a lot of
Traditional Turkish Music instruments today have fallen out of use, and therefore many
of them are forgotten. As a conclusion, to prevent any of these losses it is needed to set
up an national instruments museum, to write an encyclopedia, bibliography, to organise
symposiums, congress, conserts etc. suggestions are offered in this study.
