Modernization has been conceptualized since the 18th century. Starting from
the 19th century, it has affected almost every nation of the world as a
transformation process. Modernization process in Turkey, having started in
the late Ottoman period before the Republic, continued in the Republican
period. This is reflected in music policies based on Ziya Gökalp’s idea of
creating a new contemporary Turkish music that would rise on Turkish folk
music. With the ideas of nationalism and Turkism becoming stronger,
initiatives to create a national Turkish music led the intellectuals towards folk
music. In this new structuring of the folk music, the members of the tradition
have been directed to new searches in order to adapt the tradition of art music
to the conditions of the modernization process. In this study, establishing a
discussion on the Turkish classical choir, attempts of fusing the concepts of
tradition and modernization were presented. "Music and Politics in the
example of Modernization Process in Turkey" and "Classical Choir" were
described under the headings and examined. The research is a descriptive
survey study in which books, doctoral dissertations, articles and internet
resources were utilized.
