The overwhelming majority of the institutions that meet the needs of the
Turkish art music oriented audiences in İzmir are the amateur music
ensembles. As of 2018, the number of these ensembles having increased
significantly in İzmir's music life and in the lives of people is one hundred
and fifty. The aim of this article is to understand the purpose of the existence
of these Turkish Art Music amateur ensembles and their place / importance
for people and music life in İzmir. Fifty choirs were taken as reference for
this study. These choirs were analysed according to concepts such as
socialization, urbanization, modernization, loneliness via the data obtained by
observation, interview and questionnaire methods during the pre-concert
rehearsals and concerts. Due to the fact that amateur music ensembles define
themselves as choirs, associations, societies and communities, choruses,
associations, societies; these words were used synonymously in the text,
although there is no difference in structure, quality and function. The study
doesn’t specify any names and venues as it was conducted on condition that
no choir chief and the name of the choir to be revealed.
