In ancient times, gods’ healing power was of great importance. Asclepius, who was
a god of medicine in ancient Greece, became increasingly popular and several
healing temples called asclepeions were built during his time. This article examines
music which was one of the complementary healing practices at the Pergamon
asclepeion. The literature on the use of music and other methods in these healing
temples is often fragmented and lacks detail.
The purpose of this article is to synthesise extant research and present it in a
coherent manner whilst taking into consideration the views of scholars who have
produced works on the topic. A literature review on medical and archeological
research was conducted. This review shows that asclepeions were the pioneers of
complementary medical centres. Additionally, music and other complementary
healing methods were used together with conventional medical treatments to
speed up the healing process.
