One of the competencies for career counselors is the need to be conversant with multiple career development theories and models and possess the ability to apply them in counseling practice. The 21st century ushered in a period of unprecedented change in which nearly every facet of both personal life and career. This postmodern period saw the rise of new career development theories and models that gave greater significance to perceived realities constructed by each individual. A characteristic of many of the postmodern theories was the reliance upon metaphor to provide structure and framework which provided easily identifiable content and personal meaning. The current article reviews five of these postmodern models and the metaphors used by each. These models are Career Scope Model, Flower Exercise/Model, Four Pillars Model, Career flow: A Hope-Centered Model of Career Development, Career Sailboat Model.
