BORDERLINE INTELLECTUAL FUNCTIONING AND CLINICAL FEATURES

Öz

Borderline intellectual functioning is placed between normal functioning and mental retardation. In addition to defects in learning, reasoning and problem solving caused by cognitive deficiency; limitations in adaptation, communication,social relations and functioning are also observed. These limitations yield low quality of life and exclusion from the society. Neurodevelopmental disorders and life challenges give cause for more psychiatric illnesses. Although it is common in population; its definition, taxonomy and assesment are not clearly described. Therefore, it is difficult for clinicians to manage this situation sincescientific research is low in number and instruments used in diagnosing or treatment processes are insufficient. In these paper wemention aboutimportant points of making diagnosis and give information about vulnerabilities and risks of borderline intellectual disability

Sınır entelektüel yetersizlik tanısı ve klinik özellikleri

Öz

Sınır entellektüel yetersizlik, normal zihinsel fonksiyonu zeka geriliklerinden ayıran noktada yer alır. Bilişsel yetersizliklikten kaynaklanan öğrenme, nedensel ilişki kurma, problem çözme gibi becerilerde görülen eksikliğin yanı sıra; adaptasyon becerilerinde, iletişimde, sosyal ilişkilerde, işlevsellikte kısıtlılık gözlenebilir. Bu kısıtlılıklar daha düşük hayat kalitesi ve toplumdan dışlanmaya yol açabilir. Nörogelişimsel farklılıklar ve yaşamsal zorluklar psikiyatrik hastalıklarla daha sık karşılaşmalarına neden olmaktadır.Toplumda sık görülmesine rağmen tanımı, sınıflandırılması ve değerlendirmesine ilişkin üzerinde uzlaşılamamıştır. Bu bireylerle yapılan hem bilimsel araştırmalardaki hem de tanı ve tedavi süreçlerinde yardımcı olacak araçlardaki eksiklik klinisyenlerin bu durumu yönetmesini zorlaştırmaktadır. Bu yazıda sınır entellektüel yetersizliğe sahip bireylerin fark edilmesine ilişkin ipuçlarına değinilmiş, bu bireylerin duyarlılıkları ve karşılaştıkları riskler hakkında bilgi verilmiştir
