Objective: The study inquired if perceived
social support among students of University,
College of education differed significantly
according to gender, field of study, major, age,
family income, place of residence and place in
which individuals lived most of their lives.
Material and Method: The sample size was
calculated as 356. Data was gathered from a
total of 486 students at departments of
Mathematics Education, English Language
Education, Elementary Education, Early
Childhood Education, German Language
Education, and Psychological Counseling and
Guidance during the academic year of
2006–2007. Data were obtained with the
Personal Data Form developed by the
researchers and the Multidimensional Scale of
Perceived Social Support MSPSS (Zimet et al
1988, Eker et al 2001). Pair-wise comparisons
were done with t-tests and multiple comparisons
with one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA).
The relationships between social support and
independent variables were examined with chi
square test which revealed that low and high
perceived social support groups differed significantly
according to gender, monthly family
income and place of longest residence.
Results: Results showed that students’ levels
of perceived social support did not vary significantly
according to major (field of study), year of
study, age and monthly family income. On the
other hand, perceived social support differed
significantly according to gender, place of residence
and where individuals spent most of their
lives. The relationship between social support
and independent variables were further examined
with chi square test which revealed that
low and high perceived social support groups
differed significantly according to gender,
monthly family income and place of longest residence.
Conclusion: This study was carried
on very limited groups, so the results could not
be generalized to general population. Further
studies with university students are needed in
order to tailor support interventions in accordance
with the needs of this population.
