Validity and Reliability Study of the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (Fies) in Turkish Adults

Yıl 2026, Cilt: 4 Sayı: 1, 647 - 659, 31.01.2026

Öz

Objective: This study aimed to validate the “Food Insecurity Experience Scale(FIES)” and address the lack of a reliable and valid tool for assessing food insecurity in the Turkish population.
Materials and Methods: The study was conducted between July and August 2025 with 469 participants aged 18 years. Content validity of the scale was evaluated using the Davis method by 10 nutrition and dietetics experts. The Content Validity Index was calculated, with values ranging from 0.80-1.00. To assess construct validity, exploratory factor analysis(EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis were performed.
Results: The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin(KMO) value was 0.858, Bartlett’s test yielded χ²=1369.604 (p<0.001). EFA confirmed a unidimensional structure, with factor loadings ranging from 0.557-0.727. Cronbach’s alpha was 0.850, all item-total correlations were positive. Removing any item did not significantly increase the Cronbach’s alpha value.
Conclusion: The Turkish version of FIES is valid and reliable, providing a suitable instrument for assessing food insecurity among Turkish adults.
