“Kırım’ı Eskişehir’de Yaşatmak”: Tepreş Şenliği, Kültürel Bellek ve Diaspora Kimliği
Öz
The Tepreş Festival, held in Eskişehir since 1985, constitutes a prominent public arena in which the Crimean Tatar diaspora reproduces its cultural identity. This study examines how the diaspora in Türkiye preserves and reconstructs its cultural identity through this festival. Departing from the question of how diaspora communities sustain cultural continuity despite geographical dislocation, the study foregrounds the dynamic role of festival practices in identity construction. Two main research questions guide the analysis: What role does the Tepreş Festival play in the preservation and intergenerational transmission of Crimean Tatar diaspora identity? How do practices such as belt wrestling and children’s games acquire meaning in the diasporic context, and how do they differ from their functions in the homeland? The research is grounded in a context-centered approach and draws on theories of diaspora, identity, and cultural memory. In this framework, the festival is analyzed as a carrier of memory, a site of identity, a political public sphere, and a ground for social solidarity. The study is based on fieldwork conducted in Eskişehir in 2022, using participant observation and semi-structured interviews. The data were analyzed in relation to the theoretical framework. Ethical approval was granted by Ankara Hacı Bayram Veli University Ethics Committee 23.09.2021, No. 46327. The findings reveal that the Tepreş Festival is not merely a traditional celebration but a dynamic arena where cultural practices are transformed and intensified. Practices such as belt wrestling shift from competition toward identity expression, communal solidarity, and memory transmission. Moreover, the reflection of the 2022 Russia–Ukraine war in festival rituals demonstrates that diaspora identity is not a static nostalgic construct but a dynamic phenomenon continuously reconstructed through engagement with contemporary political developments. In this respect, the Tepreş Festival should be understood as a living field of cultural heritage that is continuously reconfigured through ongoing social, cultural, and political interactions.
