Literary Circulation and Translation between Türkiye and China: A Comparative Analysis through Mo Yan and Orhan Pamuk
Öz
This study examines the current state and underlying dynamics of literary circulation and translation between China and Türkiye within the context of contemporary cultural exchange. Drawing on reader-response theory, it analyzes how literary texts with a focus on Mo Yan and Orhan Pamuk function as cultural intermediaries in cross-cultural transmission. Grounded in the historical and cultural background of Turkish-Sino relations, the study argues that literary circulation between the two countries has rarely been direct or sustained but has instead been largely shaped through the mediation of translation, with each country’s cultural perception of the other constructed to a significant extent through this process. On the Chinese-to-Turkish side, Prof. Dr. Muhaddere Nabi Özerdim’s early work played a pioneering role. Since the 2010s, translators such as Prof. Dr. Giray Fidan and Dr. Erdem Kurtuldu have contributed to a notable expansion in both the scope and quality of Chinese literature available in Turkish. A similar pattern characterizes the reception of Turkish literature in China: before Orhan Pamuk’s Nobel Prize, Turkish literature reached only a limited readership, whereas the award marked a turning point, leading to a significant increase in interest and a deeper engagement among Chinese readers. The study concludes that Turkish-Sino literary circulation is best understood as a complex historical process. In this period, translation has not only facilitated cultural exchange but has also actively shaped how each culture perceives the other.
