Purpose: This study was aimed to evaluate the reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the Bakas Caregiving Impact Scale (BCOS-Tr) as well as its psychometric properties on Turkish caregivers of different neurological patients.
Methods: Ninety two caregivers (46.36±12.60 years) who care for patients with different neurological disorders and 80 non-caregivers (44.25±12.81 years) were included. Caregivers were evaluated using the Turkish version of the scale, and reapplied to 30 caregivers with 15-day intervals for test-re-test reliability. Also Beck Depression Scale (BDI) and Short Form-36 (SF-36) were used for all individuals.
Results: The internal consistency of the BCOS-Tr was Cronbach α =0.90, and the test-retest reliability coefficient was 0.96 (p<0.001). The Turkish scale is one-dimensional as in the original and explains 43.18% of the total variance. The total score of caregivers is 55.1/105 and a correlation was found between the total score of the scale and SF-36 and BDI (p<0.05).
Conclusion: The findings indicate that BCOS-Tr is a reliable tool to assess the impact of caregiving on caregivers. Caregiving the patients with neurological disease affect negatively the quality of life of the caregivers. Therefore; caregiver burden should be considered.
