This study investigated the effect of conventional lecturing on pre-service science teachers' understandings about the interaction of single colored light ray with lenses. From the interaction term, it is meant that how will the ray behave (reflect or refract) and in which path it will move after it hit the surface of the lens. The study was conducted with 80 pre-service science teachers at the fall semester of 2013-2014 academic years. The one group pretest-posttest design was used as research method and the instruction was conducted via conventional lecturing method. A measuring tool, consisting of 12 questions, was developed by researchers and it was administered as pre and post-tests before and after instructions. The data was analyzed by both descriptively and inferentially. Beyond, some response categories were developed based on the frequency analysis, conducted on participants' responses. The descriptive analyses denoted that although the students' mean scores increased by %100 from pretest to posttest, their posttest average mean score is still too low for the science teacher candidates. Since the data was not normally distributed, the non-parametric test of Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test for Paired Samples was conducted to investigate whether there is a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores. The results denoted that conventional lecturing increased students' understanding of the path of light rays send through the lenses significantly. However, the frequency analyses conducted on posttest response categories indicated that some of the pre-service science teachers still tended to confuse the paths of special light rays sent through lenses with those of others’ and also with those of spherical mirrors.
